1 :Microsoft Surface Go 2

Microsoft Surface Go 2

The latest member of the Microsoft Surface product family is an ultra compact, 10.5-inch tablet that’s a capable Windows 10 PC. A budget of just $400 will get you the entry-level Surface Go with 64 GB of storage and 4 GB of RAM, but you’ll have to pick up the trackpad and keyboard separately.

During our test with the Surface Go, we found that it was powerful enough to handle a steady stream of apps without slowing down. Microsoft claims that the Surface Go is capable of delivering up to 10 hours of video playback between charges.

The Surface Go 2 is a wonderful video chat companion, too. It features dual 5 MP front- and rear-facing cameras that are even clearer than the $1,700 Dell XPS 13’s webcam I most recently tested. Not only that, this computer has twin microphones that help increase clarity and reduce background noise.

Overall, this PC is a compact and versatile option that’s perfect for work or play. If you’re looking for a practical, affordable, and stylish mini laptop, you won’t be disappointed.

2 :ASUS VivoBook Flip 14 Mini Laptop

ASUS VivoBook Flip 14 Mini Laptop

For those in search of a versatile two-in-one that’s more affordable than competitors without sacrificing build quality, the VivoBook Flip 14 is worth your consideration. It provides a sleek design and speedy performance, given its sub-$400 price.

While its 4 GB of RAM usually means it suffers the occasional hiccup when you have lots of tabs open, the VivoBook Flip 14 runs most apps fine, just as long as you’re not doing any serious video editing.

Don’t let its larger 14-inch touchscreen screen deter you. The computer weighs only 3 pounds and is only about a half-inch thick. But it still packs plenty of ports, has 128 GB of storage space (enough for apps, games, and even several videos).

3 :Lenovo Chromebook C330 2-in-1 Convertible Mini Laptop

Lenovo Chromebook C330 2-in-1 Convertible Mini Laptop

The affordably priced Lenovo 2-in-1 Chromebook is a good pick for students on a budget. It has a lightweight body, a comfortable full-sized keyboard, and up to 10 hours of battery life.

The notebook’s processor isn’t the fastest around, but it’s more than sufficient for basic tasks, and it’s equipped with all the ports you need. Or as an editor at 9to5Google put it: “The C330 literally gives more expensive models a run for their money.”

The 11.6-inch touch display won’t wow you with its HD resolution, either, but its 360-degree hinge allows you to lay it flat on a table to share content with friends or classmates, and stand it up like a tent. The laptop packs a 720p HD webcam for video chats, a microSD card slot to expand its small — up to 64 GB — storage, and an HDMI port for hooking it up to a larger display.

If you want to save even more money, opt for the Acer C771T-C1WS Chromebook instead. It isn’t a 2-in-1, but it packs 13 hours of battery life and fast Wi-Fi performance.

4 :Lenovo 300e Chromebook 2nd Gen Mini Laptop

Lenovo 300e Chromebook 2nd Gen Mini Laptop

The 300e is basically a ruggedized version of the Lenovo C330 we previously mentioned. It’s much more durable thanks to its spill-resistant keyboard and drop-resistant design. It has a similar 11-inch 2-in-1 touch screen as the C330, and 4GB of RAM.

We wish it was available in configurations with more storage space — you only get 32 GB with this model. Fortunately, it packs a microSD card slot for expanding storage space when you need to.

Overall, this is a solid and affordable Chromebook that’s worth considering if you want a mini laptop that you can toss into a backpack without any need to worry about scuffing it up.

5 :ASUS VivoBook L203MA Mini Laptop

ASUS VivoBook L203MA Mini Laptop

The ASUS VivoBook is an affordable mini laptop that’s great for young students thanks to its affordable price and portable size. It’s equipped with dual USB Type-A ports, a USB-C port, a microSD card slot, and an HDMI out port. Its 11.6-inch display is bright, with a 1080p resolution.

Since the screen is on a 180-degree hinge, you can lay it flat on a table to share content with friends, classmates, or colleagues.

With up to 4 GB of RAM, an Intel Celeron N4000 processor, and 64 GB of storage, the computer might not be the most powerful on the block, but it weighs only 2 pounds and is more than capable of handling most tasks — from editing photos to watching HD videos. Plus, it has an all-day battery that should last well over 10 hours on a single charge. Plenty of time to finish that book report or science project!

6 :Acer Swift 3 Mini Laptop

Acer Swift 3 Mini Laptop

The Acer Swift 3 is a laptop that manages to find that sweet spot between price and performance. It features a 10th-generation Intel Core i5 processor, 8 GB of RAM, and a massive 512 GB solid-state drive — all impressive specs for a laptop that typically is priced below $700.

What makes the laptop really shine though is its extensive battery life. You can expect 13 hours of use before needing to recharge. This laptop has received glowing reviews from both Wirecutter and Wired for its convenient fingerprint sensor, impressive performance, and lightweight design.

Its biggest downside is that it lacks a touch screen, but at least you won’t have to worry about fingerprints dirtying up its high-resolution display!

7 :Apple MacBook Air

Apple MacBook Air

The latest MacBook Air sports an all-new and updated design that’s thinner and lighter than its predecessor. More importantly, it’s packed with Apple’s beautiful Retina display and an improved keyboard, and is powered by the latest 10th-generation Intel processors.

The laptop’s 13-inch screen is sharp, colorful, and outshines the previous Air in every way possible. Its bezels aren’t as thin as those found on some Windows laptops, but you’ll love its larger trackpad and smaller footprint.

As you’d expect from an Apple laptop, the new MacBook Air offers a premium build quality — and surprisingly enough, the computer is made of 100% recycled aluminum. It would make an excellent laptop for a college student or someone who travels frequently. But if you build graphics or edit 4K videos, we recommend opting for the more powerful MacBook Pro instead.

During our tests, we found that the Air could still handle more than 15 tabs on our browser and some light photo editing, but it started to slow down when editing large files — especially since its base model is only configured with 8 GB of RAM.

Regardless, we think the MacBook Air is a nice upgrade — especially for college students. You get better speakers, Touch ID, two USB-C ports, and 10 hours of battery life all in a small package.

8 :Dell XPS 13

Dell XPS 13

The XPS 13 is a high-end Windows 10 laptop with an eye-popping, 13.4-inch, nearly bezel-less display, a sleek aluminum body, and a battery that can last all day.

Internally, the XPS 13 uses Intel’s latest 10th-generation quad-core Ice Lake processors. We like that Dell offers buyers plenty of configuration options to cater to users’ needs and budget constraints. We personally recommend shopping for the Intel Core i5 touch-screen model that has 8 GB of RAM and a 256 GB SSD for storage, which finds the best balance between price, features, and performance for most people.

The notebook’s connectivity options include two USB-C ports with Thunderbolt 3 support, a MicroSD card reader, and a headphone jack. It’s my favorite Windows 10 laptop because of its premium finish, its powerful processor, and gorgeous display.
